Wildstar makes World of Warcraft competition
The top dog of the online role-playing games World of Warcraft gets serious competition. NCsoft at Gamescom in Cologne presented the new massively multiplayer online game (MMO) Wild Star. When the exciting mix with many traditional MMO features and a couple of small but fine idiosyncrasies comes from science fiction and fantasy in the stores, but still written in the stars. It's ready when it's ready, the chief developer of the Carbine Jeremy Gaffrey said in an interview with online world. He and his team have certainly a playable version of Wild Star brought to the Gamescom. If you like you can test it.
The player crashes into the future with a spaceship on the planet Nexus. First, it means survival. Then comes the realization that the population - the legendary and powerful Elden - are untraceable. So far so good. Each game has its story.
Wild Star stands out from the mass of the MMOs out not by the background story, but by the gameplay. Already at the character selection must in fact be determined how the game would be played. We have looked at the development of such different approach gamer to a game, said Gaffrey.
Some want to do as many opponents, others prefer to explore the world. For this reason we have introduced different paths, said Gaffrey. The player chooses either the Scouts, Soldiers, Scientists or Settlers - and thus determines its class and features the focus of the gameplay.
Depending on the category must either be brought as many opponents as possible wise around the corner (soldier), buildings erected and social contacts are made (settlers) or animals, things, and lands to be explored (scientists). Cooperation is encouraged, Gaffrey explains. In this way the tasks can be extended. All the typical MMO conventions like guilds, auction house and instances, see Wild Star of course also have their place.
All in all, from NCsoft provides an exciting concept. Whether Wild Star, however, can prevail against World of Warcraft, remains to be seen. The first scenes that act similar to WoW comically make, anyway appetite for more: Lots of action, appealing graphics, funny dialogues. The implementation of the paths idea is fun. If the game keeps the end what it promises as a Gamescom demo, it could be a real alternative to WoW.
